Dhritiman Chatterjee
Dhritiman Chatterjee (Bengali: ধৃতিমান চট্টোপাধ্যায়), born on May 30, 1945, is a distinguished Indian actor renowned for his significant contributions to independent cinema. He launched his acting career in 1970, portraying the lead role in Satyajit Ray's acclaimed film "Pratidwandi" (The Adversary). Chatterjee has collaborated with prominent directors such as Ray, Mrinal Sen, and Aparna Sen, carving out a niche in India's parallel cinema. He has also ventured into international film, working with acclaimed filmmakers like Deepa Mehta and Jane Campion.
Apart from acting, Chatterjee has established a parallel career in advertising, social communications, and documentary filmmaking. Notably, in 2019, he narrated "If Not for You," a documentary that explores Kolkata's enduring connection with the legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan.
Despite his limited filmography, he has opted for diverse roles, collaborating with both mainstream directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Mani Ratnam, and independent filmmakers. Chatterjee often goes by his screen name while being known off-screen as Sundar Chatterjee. He is also active on the English stage in Chennai.
Educated at St Xavier's Collegiate School and Presidency College in Kolkata, as well as the Delhi School of Economics, Chatterjee is celebrated for his compelling screen presence. Satyajit Ray once described him as a "star" who captivates audiences even in silence. Since December 14, 2013, he has been the anchor of the Bengali talk show "Pradhanmantri" on ABP Ananda.
