Raised in Georgia, Cain earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Morehouse College and later pursued a master’s degree in computer science at Purdue University while concurrently working for the U.S. Department of the Navy.

In 1977, he joined the Pillsbury Company, where he quickly rose through the ranks to become vice president. His remarkable leadership skills led to his appointment as chairman and CEO of Godfather's Pizza, a position he held from 1986 to 1996, during which he revitalized the brand and significantly increased sales.

Cain also made significant contributions to the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, serving as chairman from 1992 to 1996 and taking part in the Kemp Commission in 1995.
