Oleg Popov, an iconic clown, was born in the small village of Vyrubovo in the Kuntsevo district of Moscow Oblast, RSFSR, USSR. His illustrious career in the circus arts began after he graduated from the State School of Circus Arts in 1950. Initially starting as an equilibrist with a performance titled "Eccentric on a Free Wire," Popov made his mark as a carpet clown in 1951. His unique talent flourished as he joined the Youth Circus Group from 1951 to 1953, where he developed the beloved character of the "Sunny Clown"—a lively figure characterized by his vibrant blond hair, oversized striped pants, and a distinctive checkered cap.

Popov gained international acclaim by participating in the first tours of the Soviet circus across Western Europe, earning him a reputation that transcended borders. Throughout his career, he was honored with several prestigious titles, including Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1956, People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1958, and People's Artist of the USSR in 1969. After moving to Germany in 1991, he continued to entertain audiences under the alias "Hans im Glück" or "Happy Hans." In June 2015, Popov returned to Russia for the first time in 24 years, performing at the Sochi Circus during the International Professional Circus Award "Master." His final performance took place in December 2015 at the Ciniselli Circus in St. Petersburg, shortly before his passing in Rostov-on-Don while on tour.
