Helen Virginia Horton (November 21, 1923 – September 28, 2007) was a distinguished American actress whose career spanned several mediums, including television, radio, and theatre. Born in Chicago, Horton initially pursued her acting dreams in New York City before relocating to the UK after her marriage to Hamish Thomson. Settling near London, she became a prominent figure in British entertainment. Among her notable achievements, Horton voiced the ship’s computer, "Mother," in Ridley Scott's iconic 1979 sci-fi film, Alien.

A graduate of Northwestern University, Horton developed a lasting friendship with fellow actress Patricia Neal, known for her role as Helen Benson in The Day the Earth Stood Still. During their time at university, Horton showcased her talent by playing Viola in a production of Twelfth Night, with Neal portraying Olivia.

In September 1945, she and Neal shared an apartment in New York while seeking acting opportunities. Both landed roles in the play Seven Mirrors at the Blackfriars Theatre. Horton’s career reached new heights when she assumed the role of Blanche DuBois in the touring production of A Streetcar Named Desire after Vivien Leigh's departure from the London run. This transition was met with skepticism from Leigh, who famously remarked, "No one takes over for me, dear. When I leave a play, it's over."

Horton was also a devoted mother of three, with her legacy continuing through her granddaughter, acclaimed English actress Lily James.
