George Pataki
George Elmer Pataki, born on June 24, 1945, is a prominent American politician who held the office of the 53rd Governor of New York from 1995 until 2006. His political career began in the State Legislature, where he served from 1985 to 1994, and prior to that, he was the Mayor of Peekskill from 1981 to 1984. Notably, Pataki became only the third Republican to secure the governorship of New York since 1923, following in the footsteps of Thomas E. Dewey and Nelson Rockefeller.
During his tenure as governor, Pataki implemented several significant health care initiatives, led vital recovery efforts in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, and successfully enhanced New York's credit rating on three occasions. He opted not to seek a fourth term in 2006, paving the way for Democrat Eliot Spitzer to take over. Pataki, alongside his second Lieutenant Governor, Mary Donohue, remains the last Republican to be elected to a statewide office in New York, although Joseph Bruno and Dean Skelos briefly held the position of acting Lieutenant Governor in 2008.
In 2015, Pataki declared his intention to run for the Republican presidential nomination, announcing his candidacy on May 28. However, he withdrew from the race just before the primaries commenced on December 29 of the same year.
