China Zorrilla
China Zorrilla, born Concepción Matilde Zorrilla de San Martín Muñoz on March 14, 1922, in Montevideo, became a celebrated figure in Uruguayan and South American performing arts before passing away on September 17, 2014, in her hometown. Renowned for her contributions as an actress, director, producer, and writer, Zorrilla earned her place as a Grand Dame of the South American theater scene, captivating audiences across the Rioplatense region.
Her artistic journey began in the vibrant theater community of Uruguay during the 1950s and 1960s, where she honed her craft. Zorrilla later moved to Argentina, where she enjoyed a prolific career spanning more than 35 years. Over her lifetime, she starred in over 50 productions across film, television, and theater, becoming a household name in the region.
In recognition of her significant contributions to the arts, Zorrilla was honored as a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government in 2008. Additionally, in 2011, the Uruguayan postal service commemorated her legacy with a special release of 500 postage stamps featuring her image. After a remarkable career, Zorrilla retired at the age of 90, returning to Uruguay, where her influence and legacy continue to resonate in the cultural landscape.
