Katrin Välbe
Katrin Välbe, originally named Jekaterina Poska, was born on October 31, 1904, in Võru, Estonia, to Gabriel and Lydia Poska. She hailed from a notable family, with her father being a lawyer and her uncles holding significant positions in politics and the church, including statesman Jaan Poska and politician Mihkel Poska.
Välbe began her academic journey at the University of Tartu in 1922, where she pursued medical sciences but left after a year to follow her passion for the arts. In 1930, she graduated from the prestigious Drama Theatre School in Tallinn, honing her skills under the guidance of esteemed drama educator Hilda Gleser.
Her theatrical career flourished from 1931 to 1944 at Tallinna Töölisteater. Following this, she lent her talents to Noorsooteater in 1945-1946, the Estonia Theatre from 1946 to 1949, and the Estonian Drama Theatre from 1949 to 1951 and again from 1952 until 1971. Välbe's versatility extended beyond the stage; she ventured into film during the early 1950s, earning recognition in radio plays and television films.
In 1958, her contributions to the performing arts were acknowledged when she was honored as a Meritorious Artist of the Estonian SSR. Katrin Välbe's enduring legacy in Estonian theatre and film solidifies her position as a prominent figure in the cultural landscape of her time. She passed away on July 5, 1981.
