Mickey Gilley

1 title Acting Mar 09, 1936 Died: May 07, 2022 Natchez, Mississippi, USA

Mickey Gilley, born on March 9, 1936, in Natchez, Mississippi, emerged as a prominent figure in country music, hailing from a family with notable connections, including his cousins, rockabilly pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis and televangelist Jimmy Swaggart. Growing up in Ferriday, Louisiana, the trio often gathered to play the piano and perform gospel and boogie-woogie tunes. Inspired by Lewis's success in the 1950s, Gilley pursued a music career, initially recording singles and working as a session musician in New Orleans.

At just 17, Gilley entered marriage and released his first minor hit, "Call Me Shorty," in 1958. However, it was not until 1967 that he truly stepped out of Lewis's shadow with the release of his debut album, "Down the Line," which featured the single "Now I Can Live Again." Gilley made a significant mark in the entertainment scene when he opened Gilley's Club in Pasadena, Texas, in 1971. Dubbed the "world's biggest honky tonk," the venue gained iconic status after being featured in the film Urban Cowboy (1980), which significantly expanded Gilley's fame.

Throughout the 1980s, Gilley enjoyed crossover success, blending country with pop influences, and achieving an impressive total of 17 number-one hits over a span of 15 years. A turbulent business partnership led to a legal battle with his club partner Sherwood Cryer, resulting in a $17 million victory for Gilley, although it strained their relationship and led to the club's closure in 1989. In 2006, he reopened a Gilley's venue in Dallas, and additional locations have since emerged in Las Vegas and LaPorte, Texas, ensuring his legacy endures in the music and entertainment world.
