Tommy Cooper

1 title Acting Mar 19, 1921 Died: Apr 15, 1984 Caerphilly, South Wales

Tommy Cooper, born on March 19, 1921, in Caerphilly, South Wales, entered the world at 19 Llwyn Onn Street, delivered by the landlady of the home where his family was staying. His father, Thomas H. Cooper, served as a Welsh army recruiting sergeant, while his mother, Gertrude (née Wright), hailed from Crediton, Devon. Seeking better air quality and job opportunities, the family relocated to Exeter when Cooper was just three years old, where he picked up the distinctive West Country accent that later became a hallmark of his comedic persona.

Growing up, Cooper attended Mount Radford School for Boys and helped his parents with their ice cream van during local fairs. His love for magic sparked at the age of eight when an aunt gifted him a magic set, leading him to spend countless hours mastering tricks. Magic was a family affair; his brother David opened D. & Z. Cooper's Magic Shop in Slough in the 1960s.

Cooper's unique blend of comedy and magic captivated audiences throughout his career, particularly on television. Tragically, on April 15, 1984, he suffered a heart attack and collapsed on stage during a live performance of "Live From Her Majesty's" at Her Majesty's Theatre, leaving millions of viewers in shock. His comedic style, which often involved deliberate mishaps, led to initial confusion about the seriousness of his collapse, but his legacy as a beloved entertainer remains enduring.
