Rodney Ascher
Rodney Ascher is an acclaimed filmmaker known for his innovative approach to documentary filmmaking. His first feature, the unique ‘subjective documentary’ ROOM 237, delves into the intricate layers of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, presenting the perspectives of five individuals who are captivated by its enigmatic narrative. This thought-provoking film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012 and was subsequently showcased at prestigious festivals worldwide, including Cannes, London, Viennale, Sitges, Toronto, and New York.
Following this success, Ascher released THE NIGHTMARE, a ‘horror-documentary’ that investigates the chilling experience of sleep paralysis. Also premiering at Sundance, it was hailed as “The Scariest Movie of the Decade” and “One of the Scariest Documentaries Ever,” before making its way to international theaters and digital platforms.
In addition to these notable works, Ascher has directed PRIMAL SCREEN for the Shudder Network and created a visually striking GIF-centric music video for the experimental hip-hop group CLIPPING, which has been recognized with a Hugo nomination. He also contributed to Andy Kaufman’s posthumous comedy album, ANDY AND HIS GRANDMOTHER from Drag City, and is known for the controversial short film S FROM HELL. Ascher's work continues to challenge conventional storytelling, blending genres and exploring the intersection of reality and the surreal.
