Avital Ronell

Avital Ronell is a prominent American scholar renowned for her contributions to continental philosophy, literary criticism, psychoanalysis, political thought, and ethics. She holds a dual appointment as a professor in the humanities and in the departments of Germanic languages and literature and comparative literature at New York University. Additionally, she serves as the Jacques Derrida Professor of Philosophy at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee.

Born in Prague to Israeli diplomatic parents, Ronell's early career included a stint as a performance artist before she transitioned into academia. In 1956, she made her way to New York, where her intellectual pursuits flourished.

Over the years, Ronell has authored several influential works, including "The Telephone Book" and "Stupidity," which have garnered critical acclaim and contributed to her reputation as a leading thinker in her fields. Her writings often explore the intersections of language, technology, and human experience, challenging conventional boundaries in philosophy and literature.

However, her career has not been without controversy. In 2018, an investigation at New York University concluded that she had engaged in sexual harassment against a male graduate student, resulting in her suspension without pay for the academic year 2018–2019. Despite this setback, Ronell's scholarship continues to provoke thought and discussion within academic circles.
