Sean Patrick Maloney
Sean Patrick Maloney, born on July 30, 1966, is a prominent American lawyer and political figure who represented New York’s 18th congressional district from 2013 until 2023. His district encompassed key areas such as Newburgh, Beacon, and Poughkeepsie. A member of the Democratic Party, Maloney made an attempt to secure the position of New York Attorney General in 2018 but placed third in the primary behind Letitia James.
Originally from Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, and raised in Hanover, New Hampshire, Maloney earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Virginia. His political journey began as a volunteer for Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign in 1992, which led to his role as a senior adviser in the West Wing and as White House Staff Secretary.
Prior to his congressional career, Maloney held positions as an attorney and an executive in the software industry. He entered the U.S. House in 2012 by defeating Republican incumbent Nan Hayworth, positioning himself as a moderate and aligning with the centrist New Democratic Coalition. Notably, he became the first openly gay individual elected to Congress from New York. He chaired the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee from 2021 to 2023. However, in the 2022 elections, he lost his seat in New York's 17th congressional district to Republican Mike Lawler.
In June 2023, Maloney was nominated to serve as the United States ambassador to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
