Willy T. Ribbs

Willy T. Ribbs, born on January 3, 1956, in San Jose, California, is a trailblazing American race car driver celebrated for his role in breaking racial boundaries within the motorsports arena. His racing journey commenced in the 1970s, where he participated in numerous series, including Formula Ford in Europe, where he claimed the Dunlop Championship in his debut season. Ribbs etched his name in history in 1991 when he became the first African American to qualify for the Indianapolis 500, competing for Walker Motorsports. His racing portfolio also includes stints in NASCAR and the Trans-Am Series, where he secured several wins and was honored as the Pro Rookie of the Year in 1983.

In 1985, he made further history by becoming the first black driver to pilot a Formula 1 car, conducting a test for Bernie Ecclestone's Brabham team at the Estoril Circuit in Portugal. His remarkable life and career are chronicled in the 2019 documentary "Uppity: The Willy T. Ribbs Story," which sheds light on the hurdles he faced and the victories he achieved in the racing world.

Outside of driving, Ribbs has emerged as a strong advocate for increasing diversity in motorsport, motivating and encouraging future generations of racers to pursue their dreams.
