Iara Lee
Iara Lee is a Brazilian filmmaker, producer, and activist with Korean heritage, recognized for her impactful contributions to cinema and social justice. From 1984 to 1989, she played a significant role as the producer of the São Paulo International Film Festival, helping to elevate the cinematic landscape in Brazil. Subsequently, Lee relocated to New York City, where she established her mixed-media company, Caipirinha Productions, which operated from 1989 until 2003.
As the founder of the Cultures of Resistance Network, Lee has dedicated her efforts to fostering global solidarity through the lens of creative resistance and nonviolent activism. She is also the director of Cultures of Resistance Films, which produces works that highlight social issues around the world. In 2003, seeking a deeper understanding of the Iraq conflict, she moved to the MENA region, immersing herself in countries such as Syria, Yemen, Tunisia, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iran.
A notable event in her life occurred in May 2010 when she was aboard the MV Mavi Marmara during the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. The vessel was attacked by the Israeli navy in international waters, resulting in the tragic deaths of nine humanitarian aid workers. Through her films and activism, Iara Lee continues to shine a spotlight on pressing global issues and the power of creative expression in advocating for change.
