Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin (1 February 1931 – 23 April 2007) was a pivotal figure in Russian history, serving as the first President of Russia from 1991 until 1999. Born in Butka and raised in Kazan and Berezniki, Yeltsin pursued engineering at the Ural State Technical University before embarking on a career in construction. His political journey began with the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1961, where he quickly ascended the ranks, eventually becoming the First Secretary of the Sverdlovsk Oblast committee in 1976.

Initially an advocate of Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika reforms, Yeltsin became disillusioned by their gradual approach and called for a more radical shift toward a democratic multi-party system. His resignation from the Politburo in 1987 marked him as a prominent anti-establishment leader. By 1990, he had become Chair of the Russian Supreme Soviet, and in 1991, he made history as the first democratically elected leader of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.

Yeltsin was crucial in the dissolution of the Soviet Union, leading to the establishment of the Russian Federation. His presidency was characterized by sweeping economic reforms aimed at transitioning Russia to a capitalist economy. However, these changes led to significant economic hardship and the rise of oligarchs. His tenure also faced a constitutional crisis and major conflicts in the Caucasus, including the Chechen Wars. Yeltsin stepped down at the end of 1999, handing over power to Vladimir Putin, and was later honored with a state funeral following his death in 2007.
