Ann Way

Ann Way (14 November 1915 – 13 March 1993) was a distinguished English character actress celebrated for her work in film and television. Hailing from Wiveliscombe, Somerset, she embarked on her acting journey in the 1950s with a repertory company in Birmingham before moving to the Dundee Repertory Theatre.

Known for her petite stature and expressive deep-set eyes, Way often found herself cast in roles embodying the quirky, timid spinster stereotype. However, her versatility shone through in a variety of performances. She is perhaps best remembered for her roles in popular television series such as *Dr. Finlay's Casebook*, *Emmerdale Farm*, where she portrayed the aunt of publican Amos Brearly, and *Rumpole of the Bailey* as the memorable Dodo Mackintosh. Way also appeared in *Fawlty Towers*, famously playing the Colonel's wife who is served raw red mullet in the episode "Gourmet Night." Additionally, she brought warmth to the role of the vicar's wife in *Last of the Summer Wine* and narrated the beloved *Mrs. Pepperpot* stories on the children's show *Jackanory*.

Her film career included notable appearances in *Carry On Loving* (1970), *Endless Night* (1972), and *Clockwise* (1986), where she showcased her singing talent. She also played a significant role in *The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie* (1969) as Miss Gaunt. One of her unique performances was in the short film *Unusual Ground Floor Conversion* (1987), where she comically tormented her neighbor. Ann Way passed away in London on 13 March 1993, leaving behind a legacy of memorable characters.
