Terence Blanchard
Terence Oliver Blanchard, born on March 13, 1962, is a distinguished American jazz trumpeter and composer renowned for his extensive contributions to music. Over his impressive career, he has composed two operas and crafted more than 80 scores for film and television, earning critical acclaim. Notably, Blanchard received two Academy Award nominations for Original Score for his work on Spike Lee's films, *BlacKkKlansman* (2018) and *Da 5 Bloods*.
Blanchard's musical journey began in 1980 with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra while he pursued jazz studies at Rutgers University. At just 19, he left Rutgers to join the legendary ensemble, The Jazz Messengers, propelling him into a successful career spanning over 40 years. A significant milestone in his career came when the Metropolitan Opera staged his opera *Fire Shut Up in My Bones* during the 2021-2022 season, marking the first time an African American composer’s work was showcased by the prestigious institution.
In addition to his creative achievements, Blanchard is deeply committed to music education. He held the position of artistic director at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz from 2000 to 2011 and later became the artistic director of the Henry Mancini Institute at the University of Miami. In 2023, he was appointed Executive Artistic Director of SFJAZZ, overseeing its artistic vision. Recognized as a 2024 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, Blanchard joins the ranks of jazz legends like Abbey Lincoln and Herbie Hancock.
