4 titles Acting Feb 04, 1986 Tokyo, Japan

Mari Yamamoto is a talented actress and journalist from Japan. Born in Japan, she moved to London with her family in 1991, only to return to Tokyo in 1994 when she was just eight years old. This transition led her to feel like an outsider; she was perceived as "very Japanese" abroad but felt she didn’t entirely fit in upon returning to Japan.

Yamamoto pursued her education in international relations at the International Christian University in Tokyo, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. Her passion for acting led her to New York City, where she honed her craft at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. During her time in New York, she became a member of The Bats acting company at The Flea Theater, further developing her skills.

Upon returning to Tokyo, she transitioned into journalism, contributing articles to The Daily Beast alongside American journalist Jake Adelstein. This collaboration became pivotal when Adelstein’s book, Tokyo Vice, was adapted into a television series for HBO Max, where Yamamoto joined the writing team and later became a producer for the second season.

In 2022, she appeared as Hana in the Apple TV+ series Pachinko and was cast in Apple's Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. As of March 2024, she is set to star alongside Brendan Fraser in the upcoming film Rental Family, showcasing her versatile talents in both acting and production.
