José Greco

José Greco, originally named Costanzo Greco, was born on December 23, 1918, in Montorio nei Frentani, Italy. He became a prominent American flamenco dancer and choreographer, notably elevating the presence of Spanish dance in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. Greco's family relocated to New York City when he was just ten, where he began his dance journey alongside his sister, Norina, in Brooklyn.

Greco made his professional debut in 1937 at Manhattan's Hippodrome Theatre. Throughout his career, he formed significant partnerships with renowned dancers, including La Argentinita and her sister Pilar López. In 1949, he established the José Greco Dance Company, which toured extensively, showcasing the beauty of flamenco.

His film credits include notable titles such as Sombrero (1953), Around the World in 80 Days (1956), and Ship of Fools (1965). Greco's international acclaim was solidified with his performances at the Sadler's Wells Theatre in the UK and collaborative concerts with the New York Philharmonic.

Recognized for his contributions to dance, Greco received numerous accolades, including knighthood from the Spanish government and four honorary doctorates. He founded the José Greco Foundation for Hispanic Dance in 1972 and published his autobiography, *Gypsy in My Soul*, in 1977.

After a brief retirement, he returned to the stage in the late 1980s, performing with his children. Greco passed away on December 31, 2000, leaving behind a legacy as a pivotal figure in Spanish dance, remembered for his influence and artistry.
