Nafisa Ali, born in Kolkata, is the daughter of Ahmed Ali, a Bengali Muslim, and Philomena Torresan, an Anglo-Indian Roman Catholic. Her lineage includes notable figures such as her grandfather, S. Wajid Ali, a distinguished Bengali writer, and her aunt, Zaib-un-Nissa Hamidullah, a celebrated Pakistani journalist and feminist. Nafisa is also connected to Bir Pratik Akhtar Ahmed, a revered Bangladeshi freedom fighter. Currently, her mother resides in Australia.

Nafisa completed her education at La Martiniere Calcutta before pursuing her studies in Vedanta under the guidance of Swami Chinmayananda, the founder of the Chinmaya Mission of World Understanding.

She is married to retired Colonel R.S. Sodhi, a notable polo player and recipient of the Arjuna Award. Following her marriage, Nafisa devoted herself to raising her three children—daughters Armana and Pia, and son Ajit—taking an 18-year hiatus from her professional life.

After her long break, she made a remarkable return to the film industry, showcasing her talent in notable works such as "Junoon" (1992) and "Ghar Ek Mandir" (1984). In addition to her acting career, Nafisa has engaged in social causes, particularly those advocating for the welfare of women and children.
