Edward Ian MacNaughton (30 December 1925 – 10 December 2002) was a prominent Scottish actor who transitioned into a successful career as a television producer and director, earning significant recognition for his contributions to the Monty Python troupe. Born and raised in Glasgow, MacNaughton received his education at Strathallan School. His life was tragically cut short in a car accident in Munich.
MacNaughton played a pivotal role in shaping the innovative comedy of Monty Python, serving as both director and producer for the iconic series Monty Python's Flying Circus. He also directed the group's first feature film, And Now For Something Completely Different, as well as their German television special, Monty Python's Fliegender Zirkus, which showcased their unique brand of humor to a wider audience.
In 1979, he directed the short film Le Pétomane, which depicted the life of the eccentric farting artist Joseph Pujol and starred the talented Leonard Rossiter. Additionally, MacNaughton produced Spike Milligan's groundbreaking series Q, which significantly influenced the comedic style embraced by the Monty Python team.
