Marshall Allen

Marshall Belford Allen, born on May 25, 1924, in Louisville, Kentucky, is a distinguished figure in the world of avant-garde and free jazz. Renowned for his innovative contributions, he is best known for his association with the legendary bandleader and keyboardist Sun Ra. Allen's collaboration with Ra spanned from the late 1950s until Ra's death in 1993, during which he showcased his versatility on instruments such as the alto saxophone, oboe, piccolo, flute, and Electronic Valve Instrument (EVI).

In addition to his pivotal role in Sun Ra's Arkestra, Allen expanded his musical horizons by recording with notable artists, including Paul Bley in 1964 and Olatunji's ensemble in the mid-1960s. Following the passing of both Ra and fellow saxophonist John Gilmore, Allen took on the mantle of bandleader for the Arkestra, ensuring the continuation of their groundbreaking musical legacy.
