Terence Alexander

Terence Joseph Alexander (11 March 1923 – 28 May 2009) was a distinguished English actor celebrated for his portrayal of Charlie Hungerford in the beloved British television drama, Bergerac. Born in London to a medical professional, he spent his formative years in Yorkshire. His education included Ratcliffe College in Leicestershire and Norwood College in Harrogate, where he ignited his passion for acting at the young age of 16.

During World War II, Alexander served valiantly as a lieutenant with the 27th Lancers, sustaining serious injuries from artillery fire in Italy. Following the war, he returned to the stage, making a notable appearance in Ring For Catty at London's Lyric Theatre in 1956. Although his legacy is often tied to Bergerac, which aired from 1981 to 1991, he also gained recognition for his role in the 1967 BBC adaptation of The Forsyte Saga and made early appearances in the children’s series Garry Halliday.

His extensive television career included notable roles in The Avengers, Terry and June, and the 1985 Doctor Who serial, The Mark of the Rani. On radio, he portrayed The Toff in adaptations of John Creasey’s novels. In addition to his screen work, Alexander graced the West End with performances in comedies such as Move Over Mrs Markham and There Goes The Bride.

After retiring from acting in 1999, he lived in London with his second wife, actress Jane Downs, until his passing on 28 May 2009.
