Masaaki Sakai
Masaaki Sakai, born to the renowned comedian Shunji Sakai, rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of the influential band The Spiders, which debuted in 1962. This iconic group captured the hearts of Japan throughout the 1960s, producing numerous hit songs and starring in thirteen comedy films that showcased their music.
In the 1970s, Sakai gained international recognition for his portrayal of Songoku (Monkey) in the beloved Japanese television series Saiyūki. The show was later dubbed by the BBC under the title Monkey, which significantly expanded his fame in English-speaking regions during the early 1980s. His captivating performance inspired a dance called "the Monkey," which became a nationwide sensation in Japan. Following the disbandment of The Spiders, Sakai successfully embarked on a solo career, continuing to act in both film and television.
In 1999, he reunited with former bandmates Hiroshi Kamayatsu and Takayuki Inoue to form the group Sans Filtre, releasing their debut album, Yei Yei, in 2000. Beyond music, Sakai is an avid car enthusiast known for participating in the annual Mille Miglia race in Italy alongside his wife. He achieved victory in a Japanese road race on October 18, 2000, driving a 1947 Cisitalia 202 MM.
Despite facing personal challenges, including two marriages and two daughters, Sakai remains dedicated to supporting AIDS charities. His showbiz moniker is "Machaaki," and he is also passionate about archery.
