Urbanus
Urbain Servranckx, popularly known as Urbanus, was born on June 7, 1949, in Dilbeek, Belgium. A multifaceted talent, Urbanus is celebrated as a comedian, actor, musician, and comic book author. Initially performing under the name Urbanus van Anus, which referenced his backing band, he burst onto the cabaret scene in 1973. His unique style earned him immense popularity in Flanders and the Netherlands, where he continues to be a household name.
Urbanus is perhaps best known for his comedic songs, with notable hits like "Bakske vol met stro" (1979), "Madammen met een bontjas" (1980), and "Hittentit" (1982). "Bakske vol met stro," a controversial take on the nativity story, became both his signature piece and a commercial success. Despite identifying as an atheist, he participated in traditional Catholic rituals for his marriage and children's baptisms. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Prize for Liberty from the Flemish think tank Nova Civitas in 2008.
His film career includes starring roles in "Hector" (1987), "Koko Flanel" (1990), and "Seventh Heaven" (1993), with "Hector" winning accolades at the 1988 international comedy film festival in Chamrousse, France. Urbanus also voices characters in the Flemish versions of Pixar's "Cars" and "Cars 2."
In the world of comics, Urbanus created a series featuring a childlike version of himself, which debuted in 1982, alongside his work on satirical strips like "De Geverniste Vernepelingskes." His creative endeavors have cemented his status as an iconic figure in Belgian entertainment.
