Paul 'H.R.' Hudson

Paul D. Hudson, widely recognized as H.R. (Human Rights), was born on February 11, 1956, in Liverpool, England. He emerged as a pioneering force in the hardcore punk movement as the frontman of Bad Brains, a band that significantly shaped the genre. H.R.'s vocal style is exceptionally varied, showcasing a range that includes rapid-fire nasal deliveries, intense growls, smooth melodic lines, and rhythmic reggae influences. While he has often returned to Bad Brains, he has also explored solo projects, drawing heavily from reggae, showcasing his versatility as an artist.

Raised in a multicultural environment with a Jamaican mother and an American father, H.R. relocated to the United States during his childhood, eventually settling in Washington, D.C. Alongside his brother Earl, the drummer for Bad Brains, and their friends Dr. Know and Darryl Jenifer, H.R. dove into the local music scene as a teenager. The name H.R. originally stood for "hunting rod," but he later redefined it to represent "human rights."

A pivotal moment in H.R.'s life came in 1979 after experiencing a Bob Marley concert, leading him and his bandmates to embrace Rastafarian beliefs, which heavily influenced their music.
