Joris Ivens

Joris Ivens, a prominent filmmaker, was born into a creative environment as the son of C.A.P. Ivens, the proprietor of a photography shop in Nijmegen. In the 1910s, he crafted his first short film, De wigwam, with the assistance of his father's staff, featuring his own family in the cast.

Ivens pursued studies in economics and photography, and by the late 1920s, he emerged as a key figure in the Dutch avant-garde cinema movement. He played a crucial role as a technical advisor for the Filmliga, where he produced significant avant-garde works such as De brug and Regen. Additionally, he established Studio Joris Ivens, a nurturing ground for aspiring filmmakers, which became known for its contributions to experimental cinema during the early 1930s.

Transitioning into political filmmaking, Ivens directed influential documentaries like Borinage, Spanish Earth, and Indonesia Calling!, solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in the documentary genre.
