Roger Watkins
Roger Michael Watkins (September 17, 1948 – March 6, 2007) was a prominent figure in the world of underground cinema, particularly known for his controversial 1970s film, *Last House on Dead End Street*. This notorious grindhouse classic showcased not only his directorial skills but also his multifaceted involvement in the production, as he took on various roles, including actor and cameraman, often under different aliases to maintain a degree of anonymity.
Watkins' foray into the adult film industry began with an uncredited screenplay for *Mystique* (1979), directed by Roberta Findlay. In 1980, he stepped into the limelight as a director and writer of adult feature films, adopting the pseudonym Richard Mahler—a tribute to his favorite composers, Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler. His directorial works, such as *Her Name Was Lisa* (1980), *Midnight Heat* (1983), *Corruption* (1983), and *American Babylon* (1985), are often regarded as cult classics. These films transcended traditional adult content, incorporating complex narratives, elements of avant-garde, horror, and satire, positioning them closer to arthouse cinema than conventional pornography.
Throughout his career, Watkins collaborated with notable adult film stars, including Jamie Gillis and Vanessa del Rio, leaving a lasting impact on the genre. His unique approach and artistic vision continue to resonate with fans of alternative cinema.
