Richard Van Perry (June 18, 1942 – December 24, 2024) was a distinguished American record producer whose influence spanned several decades. His musical journey began in his youth at Poly Prep in Brooklyn, where he initially performed. After completing his college education, Perry emerged as a prominent figure in the music industry during the late 1960s and early 1970s, achieving considerable acclaim as a record producer. By 1982, he had earned more than twelve gold records, with four achieving the prestigious platinum status.

Between 1978 and 1983, Perry founded and operated Planet Records, a label that became synonymous with hits, largely due to its flagship act, the pop and R&B sensation The Pointer Sisters. Following the sale of Planet Records to RCA, Perry continued to make his mark as an independent producer, creating chart-topping music that resonated with audiences from the 1960s well into the 2000s. His notable productions included acclaimed albums for artists like Rod Stewart and Carly Simon. Among his standout achievements, Perry is perhaps best known for producing Carly Simon's iconic 1972 single "You're So Vain," which remains a hallmark in the landscape of popular music.
