Ruggero Raimondi, born on October 3, 1941, in Bologna, Italy, is a distinguished bass-baritone renowned for his operatic prowess and film appearances. His vocal talent was evident from a young age, and at just 15 years old, he auditioned for conductor Francesco Molinari-Pradelli, who inspired him to pursue a career in opera. Raimondi began his vocal training with Ettore Campogalliani and was accepted into the prestigious Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan at 16. He later studied in Rome under Teresa Pediconi and Armando Piervenanzi.
His breakthrough came after winning the National Competition for young opera singers in Spoleto, leading to his debut performance as Colline in *La bohème* during the Festival dei Due Mondi. Raimondi quickly gained recognition at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome as Procida in Verdi's *I vespri siciliani*, receiving acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Over time, he overcame his initial shyness and evolved into a captivating opera actor.
Raimondi's illustrious career spans major opera houses across Italy and globally, including La Fenice in Venice and the Metropolitan Opera, where he debuted as Silva in *Ernani* in 1970. His notable roles include King Philip in *Don Carlos*, Fiesco in *Simon Boccanegra*, and the title roles in *Boris Godunov* and *Don Giovanni*, among others. In addition to performing, he ventured into directing, starting with *Don Giovanni* in 1986. Notably, he appeared in the 2008 mini-series *Le Sanglot des anges* and performed on the rooftop of Milan Cathedral in 2011 to celebrate Italian unification.
