Mitski
Mitski—born Mitsuki Miyawaki Laycock on September 27, 1990—is an American singer-songwriter whose intimate, genre-defying work has earned her a devoted global following. While studying studio composition at Purchase College’s Conservatory of Music, she independently released her first two albums, *Lush* (2012) and *Retired from Sad, New Career in Business* (2013), which began as her senior project. Her breakout came with *Bury Me at Makeout Creek* (2014), released on Double Double Whammy.
After signing with Dead Oceans in 2015, Mitski released a trio of critically acclaimed albums: *Puberty 2* (2016), *Be the Cowboy* (2018), and *Laurel Hell* (2022)—the last of which charted in the top ten across multiple countries. In 2022, *The Guardian* hailed her as the "best young songwriter" in the United States. That same year, she co-wrote “This Is a Life” with Son Lux for the film *Everything Everywhere All at Once*, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
Her seventh studio album, *The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We* (2023), yielded the single “My Love Mine All Mine,” which became her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. With a career marked by raw emotional depth and striking artistic evolution, Mitski continues to redefine the boundaries of modern songwriting.
