Steven Schachter is a prominent American director and screenwriter known for his work in television, theatre, and film. He has built a notable career, particularly through his collaborations with actor William H. Macy. Together, they crafted a series of successful cable movies, including *The Con* (1998), *A Slight Case of Murder* (1999), *Door to Door* (2002), and *The Wool Cap* (2004), with Schachter directing all of these projects featuring Macy in the lead roles.

In addition to these collaborations, Schachter has directed various other made-for-TV films, most notably an adaptation of David Mamet's play *The Water Engine*. His initial staging of the play was at the off-Broadway Public Theater in 1977, followed by a Broadway production at the Plymouth Theatre in 1978. In 2006, he directed the television movie *The Mermaid Chair*, further demonstrating his versatility in storytelling.

Schachter's recent endeavors continue to feature Macy, with the completion of the film *The Deal* in May 2007, which Macy wrote and starred in, slated for release in 2008. They are also working on a TNT pilot titled *Family Man*, showcasing Macy as a seemingly perfect husband and father who secretly operates a burglary ring, highlighting Schachter's knack for blending drama with intriguing narratives.
