Originally from Colchester, England, she spent her formative years in Fredrikstad, Norway. Barker honed her craft at the Theatre Academy in Oslo from 1985 to 1988, where she made her acting debut in the 1985 film "Dragens fange" (Trees Grow on the Stones Too), a collaborative project between Norway and Russia.

Her career took a significant leap with the release of the dystopian film "Sweetwater" in 1988, which established her as a prominent figure in the Norwegian film industry. This was followed by her role in "Havet stiger" (The Ocean Rises) in 1990. That same year, she ventured onto the stage, portraying Perdita in Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale" at Centralteatret, marking her stage debut.
