His career flourished as he played for several prominent clubs, including Åtvidabergs FF, PSV Eindhoven, IFK Göteborg, Standard Liège, and AS Monaco, ultimately concluding his playing days at Örgryte IS in 1985.

During his international career from 1972 to 1980, Edström earned 40 caps for the Sweden national team and netted 15 goals. He showcased his skills on the global stage, representing Sweden in the FIFA World Cups of 1974 and 1978.
