Jean-Pierre Adam
Jean-Pierre Adam, born on November 24, 1937, in Paris, is a distinguished French architect and archaeologist renowned for his expertise in ancient architectural studies. After earning a special diploma from the School of Architecture in 1965, Adam joined the ancient architecture department at the CNRS, where he made significant contributions to the field.
Throughout his career, Adam directed the Office of Ancient Architecture in Paris, which is housed in the historic north tower of the Château de Vincennes. He has conducted extensive research and excavations at numerous ancient sites across the Mediterranean, including significant work in Pompeii. His 1999 publication, "Roman Building: Materials and Techniques," is considered a notable work in the study of Roman architecture.
Between 1991 and 1999, Adam collaborated with Christiane Ziegler and Guillemette Andreu-Lanoë on the excavation of the Tomb of Akhethetep in Saqqarah, culminating in a published account of their discoveries. He has also written extensively on Greek architecture, with works such as "L'architecture militaire grecque" (2000), and explored ancient Egyptian structures in "Les pyramides d'Égypte."
In addition to his research, Adam has been dedicated to education, teaching at various prestigious institutions, including the École du Louvre and the École de Chaillot, as well as the École d’architecture de la ville et des territoires Paris-Est and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) as of 2021. His influence has extended through academic positions in Paris, Rome, and Lebanon, solidifying his legacy in the field of architectural archaeology.
