Marie Dressler, originally named Leila Marie Koerber, was born on November 9, 1868, in Canada and later became a prominent figure in both American theater and cinema. Known for her comedic talent, Dressler embarked on her artistic journey by leaving home at the tender age of 14. She honed her craft in various traveling theater companies, where her ability to evoke laughter began to shine.

Her Broadway career took off in 1892 and spanned until the 1920s, where she showcased her comic prowess in vaudeville and operatic performances, often improvising to captivate her audience. Dressler made history in 1914 by starring in the first full-length comedy film, "Tillie's Punctured Romance," alongside legends Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand. Although her stage presence remained strong in New York City, her film career saw a decline during the 1920s.

A remarkable resurgence occurred when Dressler returned to film at age 59 in 1927, leading to a series of notable successes. She received the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in "Min and Bill" in 1930-31 and was celebrated as the leading film star in 1932 and 1933. Marie Dressler's vibrant career was cut short when she passed away from cancer on July 28, 1934, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and resilience.
