George Miller
George Miller AO, born on March 3, 1945, is a distinguished Australian filmmaker celebrated for his impactful contributions to cinema over a span of more than forty years. He is best known for the iconic Mad Max series, which he launched in 1979, with two installments being recognized among the finest action films ever made. Miller's career is adorned with numerous prestigious awards, including an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe.
Miller first gained widespread recognition with the release of the dystopian action films Mad Max (1979), Mad Max 2 (1981), and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). He later ventured into diverse genres, directing the dark fantasy comedy The Witches of Eastwick (1987) and the poignant biographical drama Lorenzo's Oil (1992), which he co-wrote and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Additionally, he produced and co-wrote the beloved family film Babe (1995), which garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, and directed its follow-up, Babe: Pig in the City (1998).
In 2006, Miller won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Happy Feet, which he followed with its sequel, Happy Feet Two, in 2011. His return to the Mad Max franchise brought forth the critically lauded Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), which secured six Oscars and earned him a nomination for Best Director. He is set to release Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in 2024.
Before his filmmaking career, Miller trained as a physician at the University of New South Wales and practiced medicine for several years. He co-founded the production companies Kennedy Miller Mitchell and Dr. D Studios. Following the passing of his collaborator Byron Kennedy, his brother Bill Miller and Doug Mitchell have partnered in producing his more recent projects.
