William Joseph Devane, born on September 5, 1937, is a prominent American actor recognized for his impactful performances in film, television, and theater. He is perhaps best known for portraying Greg Sumner, a powerful corporate figure, on the iconic primetime soap opera *Knots Landing*, as well as for his role as James Heller in the thrilling series *24*, which he later reprised in *24: Live Another Day*. Devane's filmography includes key supporting roles in notable films such as *McCabe & Mrs. Miller*, *Family Plot*, *Marathon Man*, *Rolling Thunder*, and *Space Cowboys*.

Devane launched his acting journey at the New York Shakespeare Festival, where he participated in 15 productions. His career gained momentum in 1966 with his portrayal of Robert F. Kennedy in the Off-Broadway satire *MacBird*. He earned acclaim for his performance as President John F. Kennedy in the docudrama *The Missiles of October* and as blacklisted radio host John Henry Faulk in the Emmy-winning film *Fear on Trial*.
