Hugo Wallace Weaving AO, born on April 4, 1960, is an accomplished English actor. He entered the world in Colonial Nigeria to English parents but has spent his entire professional life in Australia. Weaving has earned accolades, including six Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTA), and he has been honored as an Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia.

Weaving's career took off with a significant role as Douglas Jardine, the captain of the English cricket team, in the Australian TV series Bodyline in 1984. His performance in the film Proof (1991) marked a turning point in his career, allowing him to gain widespread recognition, which he solidified with his role in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994). His performance in Proof earned him his first AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

As the new millennium approached, Weaving captured international attention with pivotal roles in major American films. He is well-known for portraying Agent Smith in the original three The Matrix films (1999–2003), Elrond in both The Lord of the Rings (2001–2003) and The Hobbit trilogies (2012–2014), and the lead character in V for Vendetta (2005). Additionally, he played Johann Schmidt, also known as Red Skull, in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Beyond his live-action performances, Weaving has lent his voice to several animated works, including Babe (1995), Happy Feet (2006), and Happy Feet Two (2011), as well as voicing Megatron in the Transformers series (2007–2011). He has also reprised his iconic roles in video game adaptations of The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings.
