Brian Johnson, born Brian Johncock on June 29, 1939, is a distinguished British designer and director recognized for his contributions to film and television special effects. He adopted the surname Johnson during the 1960s, marking the beginning of a prolific career in the realm of visual effects.

His journey commenced with notable collaborations with special effects artist Les Bowie, contributing to projects such as *On the Buses* and productions for Hammer Films. Johnson gained prominence for his exceptional work on television series like *Thunderbirds* (1965–66) and iconic films, most notably *Alien* (1979). His efforts on *Alien* earned him an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1980, which he shared with esteemed professionals including H. R. Giger and Carlo Rambaldi. Earlier in his career, he crafted miniature spacecraft for Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking film *2001: A Space Odyssey* (1968).

Johnson's innovative work on the series *Space: 1999* notably influenced the special effects seen in the *Star Wars* franchise. His talents caught the eye of George Lucas, who sought him as the effects supervisor for *Star Wars* (1977). However, Johnson was already committed to the second season of *Space: 1999*. He later contributed to *The Empire Strikes Back* (1980), which garnered a Special Achievement Academy Award in 1981, awarded collectively to Johnson and his fellow effects artists Richard Edlund, Dennis Muren, and Bruce Nicholson.
