Jonathan Harris, originally named Jonathan Daniel Charasuchin, was born on November 6, 1914, and passed away on November 3, 2002. He was a distinguished American character actor whose extensive career encompassed over 500 appearances across television and film, along with numerous voice roles. Among his most recognized characters were the shy accountant Bradford Webster from the television adaptation of The Third Man and the fastidious antagonist Dr. Zachary Smith in the iconic 1960s sci-fi series Lost in Space. In the later stages of his career, he lent his voice to beloved animated films such as A Bug's Life and Toy Story 2.
Harris's passion for acting ignited early in life. At 24, he crafted a fictitious résumé to audition for a repertory company at the Millpond Playhouse in Long Island, New York, eventually appearing in various productions before officially joining the troupe. His breakthrough came in 1942 when he secured the lead role of a Polish officer in the Broadway production The Heart of a City, adopting a Polish accent and telling producers his heritage. In 1946, he starred alongside Marlon Brando in A Flag Is Born.
In 1990, Harris celebrated the 25th anniversary of Lost in Space with a reunion of the show's cast, an event that drew over 30,000 devoted fans. He continued to engage with audiences at various conventions, including a notable appearance at Disney World in 1996, alongside fellow cast members.
