Fred Rouhling
Fred Rouhling, born in 1970 in Valençay, is a prominent figure in the world of French climbing, renowned for his remarkable contributions to both sport climbing and bouldering. Growing up in the picturesque countryside near Angoulême, he was introduced to climbing at a young age, quickly achieving an impressive grade of 8b by the time he turned 19, during an era when the highest recorded climbs were at 8c.
After pursuing studies in southern France, Rouhling made headlines by establishing significant climbing routes, including UFO, the first 8c route in the Calanques, and Les Spécialistes Direct, which was the first of its kind in the Verdon Gorges. He is credited with creating the first 9a route in France and the fourth globally, a milestone that transformed the landscape of French sport climbing. This accomplishment was validated by climbers such as Dai Koyamada and Sébastien Bouin. Additionally, Rouhling's natural routes, including Salamandre (2007, 9a+), further demonstrated his extraordinary skill.
Beyond traditional climbing, Rouhling made waves in bouldering, successfully repeating several challenging routes, including E la nave va, achieving up to grade 8C (V15). He ranked among the top climbers worldwide, peaking at third place in the 8a.nu combined rankings in 2003.
Following personal challenges, including his wife's serious illness, Rouhling shifted focus away from competition to prioritize family while occasionally engaging in extreme climbing. He has since embraced sculpture, merging his artistic interests with his climbing legacy. As a pioneering and sometimes controversial figure, Fred Rouhling remains a celebrated and influential presence in the climbing community.
