Kevin Meade Williamson, born on March 14, 1965, is a prominent American screenwriter and director renowned for his pivotal role in shaping the modern horror genre, particularly through the creation of the Scream franchise. Frustrated by his struggles in the acting world, Williamson turned to screenwriting in 1995, penning a self-aware horror-comedy script originally titled Scary Movie. This script caught the attention of Miramax Films and was ultimately transformed into Scream, directed by the legendary Wes Craven. Released in 1996, Scream became a cultural phenomenon, heralding a resurgence in horror films and spawning six sequels and a television adaptation by 2026.

Williamson's success with Scream established him as a leading screenwriter of the 1990s, leading to notable projects such as the suspenseful thriller I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) and the sci-fi horror film The Faculty (1998). He also created the influential teen drama Dawson’s Creek (1998), which drew from his own experiences and enjoyed a successful six-season run.

In 1999, Williamson made his directorial debut with the dark comedy Teaching Mrs Tingle. His extensive filmography includes the popular series The Vampire Diaries (2009) and The Following (2013), along with the werewolf horror film Cursed (2005). In a return to form, Williamson co-wrote and directed Scream 7 in 2026, signaling his ongoing influence in the franchise he helped establish.
