JP Auclair
Jean-Philippe Auclair, a prominent Canadian freeskiier, was born in Sainte-Foy, Quebec. He made a significant mark on the skiing world in 1998 when he played a pivotal role in the launch of the Salomon 1080 ski, a groundbreaking product in the freestyle skiing scene. In 2002, Auclair co-founded Armada Skis with fellow freeskier Tanner Hall, establishing a brand entirely dedicated to freestyle skiing. His unique personal style, characterized by various facial hair trends, including a long goatee in the mid-90s and a distinctive Magnum, P.I. mustache, became a recognizable aspect of his persona.
Auclair was not only an athlete but also a dynamic presence in the ski film industry, showcasing his talents in numerous projects. One of his notable appearances was in Sherpas Cinema's acclaimed film, All.I.Can, released in 2012, which highlighted innovative skiing techniques and stunning visuals.
Tragically, Auclair’s life was cut short when he perished in an avalanche on September 29, 2014, while filming for the web series Apogee Skiing on Monte San Lorenzo in Aysen, Chile. He was with fellow skier Andreas Fransson at the time of the accident. His last words, known only to his protégé Mehdi Trari, remain a private memory, underscoring the profound impact Auclair had on those around him and the skiing community at large.
