The only child of a police officer with a hidden artistic talent, she grew up in a family rooted in education. This background likely inspired her initial pursuit of teaching, leading her to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. After a brief four-year stint as a schoolteacher in Milwaukee, Tomei decided to follow her passion for acting and enrolled at the renowned Goodman School of Drama in Chicago, where she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater.
