Kim Jong-nam

Kim Jong-nam

5 titles Acting May 10, 1971 Died: Feb 13, 2017 Pyongyang, North Korea

Kim Jong-nam, born in 1971, was the firstborn son of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and was positioned as the likely successor to his father from around 1994 until 2001. His prospects diminished significantly after a public relations blunder in 2001, when he attempted to visit Tokyo Disneyland using a counterfeit passport. Although he attributed his decline in favor to his calls for reform, this incident marked the beginning of his estrangement from the regime.

By approximately 2003, Kim Jong-nam had been exiled from North Korea and subsequently emerged as a rare voice of criticism against the ruling family. In September 2010, his half-brother, Kim Jong Un, was designated as the new heir apparent, further distancing Kim Jong-nam from the North Korean leadership.

Tragically, Kim Jong-nam’s life was cut short on February 13, 2017, when he was assassinated at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia with the lethal nerve agent VX. His death drew international attention and sparked investigations into the nature of the attack.

In a surprising twist, a report by The Wall Street Journal on June 10, 2019, revealed that Kim Jong-nam had been a source for the CIA, suggesting he had been involved in intelligence operations against the very regime he was born into, highlighting the complexities of his life and relationships within North Korea’s ruling dynasty.
