Pete Duel
Pete Duel, born on February 24, 1940, in Rochester, New York, was the first of three children to Dr. Ellsworth and Lillian Deuel (née Ellstrom). He grew up alongside his younger brother, Geoffrey, who also pursued a career in acting, and his sister, Pamela.
Duel's early education took place at Penfield High School, where he became active in various extracurricular activities, including serving on the yearbook staff and engaging in student government, while also joining the National Thespian Society. After high school, Duel took his talents to New York City, where he secured a role in the touring production of the comedy *Take Her, She’s Mine*. Seeking broader opportunities, he and his mother journeyed to Hollywood in 1963, armed with little more than a tent for shelter.
In Los Angeles, Duel quickly found his footing in television, notably starring as Dave Willis in the romantic comedy *Love on a Rooftop*. Despite the show's initial success, it was not renewed after its first season, prompting Duel to seek more serious roles. In 1970, he adopted the stage name Pete Duel, and landed the iconic role of Hannibal Heyes in the Western series *Alias Smith and Jones*, alongside Ben Murphy.
Beyond acting, Duel was politically engaged, actively supporting Eugene McCarthy during the contentious 1968 presidential primaries. Tragically, on December 31, 1971, Duel died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in Hollywood Hills, a loss that resonated deeply within the entertainment community. He was laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery in Penfield, New York, with a memorial attended by nearly 1,000 mourners. After his passing, the show struggled to maintain its former success, leading to its cancellation in 1973.
