Patsy Byrne
Patricia 'Patsy' Byrne (13 July 1933 – 17 June 2014) was a talented English actress renowned for her memorable performances, particularly as 'Nursie' in the beloved historical sitcom Blackadder II and as the overbearing mother of Malcolm in the ITV comedy Watching.
Her early education took place at Ashford County Grammar School, followed by drama studies at Rose Bruford College. Byrne's career took off in the early 1960s when she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, showcasing her talent in productions such as Maria in Twelfth Night and Gruscha in The Caucasian Chalk Circle at the Aldwych Theatre. She continued to hone her craft at the Chichester Festival Theatre during the 1980s.
Byrne's versatility allowed her to appear in a variety of television shows and films. She starred alongside Tony Robinson in a memorable episode of Maid Marian and Her Merry Men and took on the role of "Betty the Tea Lady" in the children's series Playdays. Her impressive filmography includes notable appearances in I, Claudius (1976), Stealing Heaven (1988), Inspector Morse (1989), Les Misérables (1998), David Copperfield (1999), and Kevin & Perry Go Large (2000), in addition to numerous radio dramas. Notably, she portrayed the giant nanny in the 1990 BBC adaptation of C.S. Lewis' The Silver Chair, leaving a lasting impact on British television and theatre.
