Edward Higgins White II (November 14, 1930 – January 27, 1967) was a distinguished American aeronautical engineer, United States Air Force officer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut. He made significant contributions to the field of space exploration during his career, which was marked by notable achievements and pioneering missions.
White became famous as the first American astronaut to conduct a spacewalk during the Gemini 4 mission in June 1965. His historic extravehicular activity lasted approximately 20 minutes, showcasing human capabilities outside the confines of a spacecraft and paving the way for future space missions. In addition to his Gemini mission, White was also selected as a crew member for the ill-fated Apollo 1 mission.
