Born in Mavrolithari, Fokida, Fountas began his career during a challenging period in Greece, making his film debut in Giorgos Tzavellas' Applause (1944), recognized as a landmark film of the occupation era. He honed his craft at the Drama School of the Athens Conservatory, learning under notable instructors while also pursuing sports, including football and amateur athletics.

Fountas gained significant recognition in the 1950s and 1960s, particularly for his compelling role in Michael Cacoyannis' Stella (1955), which features one of the most iconic lines in Greek cinema. This film not only showcased his talent but also catapulted him to international fame, especially with Melina Mercouri's celebrated performance. His filmography includes distinguished works such as Magic City (1954), The Girl in Black (1956), and Jules Dassin's Never on Sunday (1960), which solidified his international standing.

He continued to shine in the 1960s with acclaimed performances in films like America, America (1963) and Zorba the Explorer (1964), both of which garnered Academy Award nominations. Fountas also excelled on television, most notably in the series Christ is Crucified Again (1975-1976).
